Confirm exactly what you are accepting
Match the programme name, campus, intake, duration and study load across your offer and fee statement. Read every condition, including academic results, English evidence and document checks. Ask the provider what remains outstanding and the date by which it must be resolved.
For a pathway or packaged offer, identify each stage, its separate cost and what is required to progress. Keep the written answer alongside the offer rather than relying on a summary in an email or conversation.
Check the amount, recipient and payment date
Use the provider’s official website or a contact you independently confirm to check payment instructions. If bank details change, verify the change through that established contact before transferring money. Confirm the NZD amount, transfer charges, exchange rate and reference needed to match your payment to your account.
Read the current INZ student fund requirements when coordinating tuition payment and visa preparation. Use the provider’s actual deadline and the official process applicable to your application; an accommodation deadline may be different.
Read the refund terms for each payment
Find the policy that applies to your programme and enrolment year. Ask what happens if you withdraw, defer, fail to meet an offer condition or cannot obtain the required visa. Record the deadline, deduction, documents required and expected processing time. Confirm whether a deposit is part of tuition or an additional charge.
Accommodation has its own agreement. Check its cancellation terms separately, even when it is arranged through the university. Keep a copy of the terms that applied when you paid and retain payment receipts.
Make the funding dates workable
Compare payment deadlines with when your funds will actually be accessible. A confirmed education loan may have a drawdown process; a scholarship may pay the provider directly or begin after arrival. Ask who receives each payment and which costs remain yours.
Keep the base budget workable with confirmed support. For a possible job, review INZ’s student work guidance and the conditions of your visa. Permission to work does not establish that a job or a particular number of paid hours will be available.
Keep your before-you-pay checklist
Tick each item after checking the relevant document or receiving an answer. Use a short note such as “Provider confirmed by email on 12 January” or “Waiting for revised invoice.” Keep private documents in your own files. Save the editable checklist below to continue later; printing gives you a reading copy.
Revisit the plan when an answer changes
When a fee statement, accommodation quote or funding decision arrives, update the matching amount and payment date in your student budget. Save a dated copy so you and anyone helping to pay can see which figures the budget uses.
