For an annual bill, add its next due date if known. When it falls within your move plan’s eight arrival weeks, the full bill is added on that date and its weekly allowance is left out of that plan’s living-cost total. Your settled budget still includes the allowance.

Start with the home, commute and care you will actually use
A couple renting a two-bedroom apartment in our Avondale example spends $988.46 a week, including rent and reserves for irregular bills. Our family of four in a three-bedroom house comes to $1,376.60 a week. Both cook mainly at home and have one adult commuting to central Auckland five days a week. These are worked budgets with specified choices; changing the home, care timetable or car use can move the total considerably.
All amounts are New Zealand dollars. Prices were checked on 12 October 2026; the rent figures describe 1 March–31 August 2026. The examples combine observed prices with chosen quantities and clearly labelled allowances.
| Household | Weekly rent | Other weekly costs and reserves | Total per week | Average month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two adults, two-bedroom Avondale apartment, no car | $550.00 | $438.46 | $988.46 | $4,283.34 |
| Two adults, children aged four and eight, three-bedroom Avondale house, one existing car | $650.00 | $726.60 | $1,376.60 | $5,965.25 |
Rent is the Tenancy Services median for each dwelling type in the named Avondale market-rent area. It describes recorded tenancies, rather than a particular home available today. Compare the local rents and their middle ranges, then replace the figure with a suitable listing or agreed rent.
The family example assumes one parent can cover care outside three kindergarten days and during school holidays. It includes a reserve for school supplies, clothing and activities, with domestic state-school status already confirmed. The car is already owned outright. Both examples assume an all-electric home and separately charged metered water.
Add any costs that apply to you: private health or travel insurance, school tuition, after-school or holiday care, debt repayments, remittances, pets, a second commute, taxis and paid parking. The totals also leave out initial furniture, vehicles and devices, vehicle finance or depreciation, relocation costs, retirement saving and an emergency-fund target. Put purchases and arrival payments in the move-cost planner; add recurring commitments as budget rows. Compare spending with take-home income after payroll deductions.
A home-cooking basket costs $134 or $208 before extras
The 28 foods below cost $133.54 a week for two adults and $208.17 for the family, using prices displayed by FreshChoice Avondale on 12 October 2026. These are that store’s listed prices, including GST. We assume shopping in person, with no online fulfilment fee.
The quantities cover an example week of porridge or toast for breakfast; sandwiches, fruit, yoghurt and leftovers for lunch; and dinners built around chicken and rice, mince-and-lentil pasta, chickpea vegetables, tuna potatoes and egg fried rice. Adapt the meals to your household. Appetite, dietary needs, waste and brand choices will change what you buy, so use this as a price example rather than a nutritional minimum.
The examples add $20 a week for the couple and $30 for the family for tea or coffee, spices, sauces, snacks and other food top-ups. These are chosen allowances; eating out is in a separate recreation allowance.

A fraction of a pack is a weekly share of something bought less often. For example, 250 g of the $14.99 one-kilogram cheese block contributes $3.75 to the couple’s week; buying the block still requires $14.99 at checkout. Each weekly line is rounded to cents before the basket is added. Allow extra arrival cash for the first full pantry shop.
Food is separate from household supplies. The example uses a quarter of a $8.30 one-kilogram Surf Sensitive laundry powder pack and a quarter of a $3.65 WW 12-roll toilet-paper pack each week for the couple: $2.99, after rounding the two allocations. The family uses half of each pack: $5.98. Other cleaning and toiletries have explicit $10/$15 weekly allowances. These two product prices were checked at the same store on the same date: laundry powder and toilet paper.
Power and water depend on the property and usage
The electricity rows show the calculation: a daily charge plus electricity consumed. We use $1.955 a day and 32.11 cents per kWh, the October rates in Powershop’s Auckland Central and South Classic Low User Standard Power table for an uncontrolled connection, published 1 April 2026. At an assumed 90 kWh a week, that gives $42.58; at 140 kWh, $58.64. These are worked tariff examples. Powershop says new customers with communicating smart meters join its Get Shifty pricing, so obtain a quote for the actual address and meter before using these figures. Winter consumption and rates can differ. An extra 50 kWh at the example rate adds $16.06. Powershop rate card.
Watercare’s charges from 1 July 2026 are $2.46 per 1,000 litres of water and $4.28 per 1,000 litres of wastewater, including GST. Our chosen use is 150 litres per person per day. Applying Watercare’s wastewater proportions—95% for apartments and 78.5% for the usual house calculation—gives $13.70 a week for the couple and $24.44 for the family. Watercare charges.
The water rows assume a separate meter and usage charges attributable to that tenancy. Fixed charges payable regardless of occupancy belong to the landlord; they are excluded here. Ask how the building bills water, especially for an apartment. If a charge is already included in rent, mark it included in the planner. Tenancy Services explains who pays water charges.
Price the connection and the journey, then count how often
Both households use $70 a month for 2degrees Fibre Starter with an existing compatible modem. That is the plan charge in terms effective 14 August 2026; the old $65 remains in the page title. Address availability, installation and any setup fee still need checking. The examples use no bundled discount. A provider-supplied modem can add charges. 2degrees plan terms.
Two Skinny $17 four-week plans cost $8.50 a week together. Each listed plan has 2 GB of rollover data; the phones are already owned and compatible. A four-week renewal occurs every 28 days, so it is different from a $17 calendar-month bill. Extra data, roaming, devices and initial SIM costs are outside this row. Skinny plans.
For the commute, Avondale is in AT’s Isthmus fare zone and Britomart is in the City zone. A two-zone adult bus/train journey costs $4.90 with AT HOP or contactless payment, from 1 February 2026. Two separate journeys on each of five workdays cost $49 a week. Three commuting days would cost $29.40, saving $19.60 before any changes to home spending. The couple’s second adult makes four one-zone journeys at $3 each, adding $12. Check your exact stops, transfers and travel days with AT; no concession is assumed. AT fares and fare zones and journey planning.
The family’s car row assumes 150 kilometres a week, 7 litres per 100 kilometres and an illustrative $3 per litre: $31.50 a week. The fuel price is a planning input, not a checked forecourt price. Raising it by 50 cents adds $5.25 a week at that usage. Separate rows hold $780 a year for maintenance, tyres and WoF, and a $1,200 insurance allowance; replace both with the car’s needs and quotes. The separate $185 annual rego allowance also needs replacing with the fee for your vehicle and renewal period. Check NZTA licence fees.
Match childcare costs to the hours you need
Avondale Christian Kindergarten lists $20.25 a week for a three-to-five-year-old attending three short days, 8:30 am–3:30 pm, with ECE funding applied. Three seven-hour days use 18 funded hours, because the daily limit is six; three hours remain payable at $6.75. At that hourly rate, 21 hours without ECE funding would cost $141.75. Kindergarten fees and Ministry of Education funding rules.
Our family sets aside $810 a year: 40 booked weeks at $20.25, averaging $15.58 a week across the year. Forty weeks is our planning assumption, not a confirmed provider contract. Check available places, the hours allocated on enrolment, paid weeks, holiday and absence rules, and any extra charges. The example needs a parent available for the other hours, including the eight-year-old’s after-school time. Add paid cover if your work pattern requires it.
The same provider lists five short days at $101.25 a week with ECE funding. Over the same assumed 40 weeks, switching from three to five days adds $3,240 a year, or $62.31 a week averaged over the year. An extra workday can therefore affect both income and care costs.
Turn the examples into your own budget
Work through the large commitments first, then the smaller repeat purchases:
- Choose the dwelling. Enter the rent for the whole home and identify any included water, power or internet.
- Count journeys and care hours. Use actual workplaces, school pickup times and holiday arrangements. Include a second commuter if needed.
- Replace the food basket. Keep a normal week’s meals in mind, price the quantities you use, and add dietary or household essentials missing here.
- Get property and personal quotes. Replace power, broadband and insurance assumptions; check health charges and any school tuition that applies.
- Add commitments and reserves. Enter debt, overseas payments, pets, saving goals and foreseeable irregular bills. A blank amount means it still needs work; zero means none applies.
- Check against take-home pay. Leave room for uncertain costs, then compare the result with cash available on your actual paydays.
The health, insurance, clothing, recreation and replacement figures are editable allowances, not measured New Zealand averages. Replace them with your bills, quotes or chosen amounts. Review the budget after the first full month and again after a winter power bill.
Convert costs to weekly averages and enter bill due dates
Use weekly × 52 ÷ 12 for an average month, monthly × 12 ÷ 52 for a weekly average, and annual ÷ 52 for a weekly reserve. A $120 monthly bill becomes $27.69 a week. A $600 weekly rent becomes $2,600 a month. Four weeks is shorter than an average calendar month.
A $1,200 annual premium needs a $23.08 weekly reserve, but a new arrival may owe the full $1,200 before that reserve has accumulated. In the move-cost planner, enter the full premium on its due date. Remove that premium’s reserve from the weekly living-cost amount used in that cash plan, so the same cost is counted once. The living-budget planner supplies a separate total without rent because the move planner already has a rent field.
Keep bond and advance rent, temporary accommodation, initial purchases and setup charges in the arrival plan. A sustainable settled budget and enough cash to reach the first payday are both necessary.
Questions about New Zealand living costs
How much does a couple need each month in Auckland?
Our two-adult Avondale example totals $4,283.34 per average month, including a $550 weekly two-bedroom apartment rent. It assumes no car, one five-day city commute, mainly home cooking and the allowances listed above. Use the editable rows to test your own rent, two commutes, food habits and commitments.
Does a cheaper rental always make the household budget cheaper?
No. Compare rent with the travel and care costs attached to that address. A saving of $50 a week in rent leaves $30 if the move adds $20 in travel; extra childcare can change the result again. Check pickup times and the complete journey before choosing a home on rent alone.
Are 20 hours of preschool automatically a free three-day booking?
No. ECE funding for children aged three to five is limited to six hours a day and 20 a week. Three seven-hour days leave three paid hours, even though the booking totals only 21 hours. Confirm the funded hours and full fee with the provider when enrolling. Ministry of Education guidance.
Can I halve the couple’s total to budget for one adult?
No. A person renting the same apartment still pays its full rent and usually needs a broadband connection and the electricity daily charge. Start with the couple’s example, change the housing arrangement, then reduce food, mobile plans, travel and personal allowances to the costs you will actually pay.
How much extra cash should I keep for bills that vary?
List the uncertain bills and test specific increases: another commuting day, more heating, an insurance excess or a repair quote. Add the reserve you can fund to your budget and enter known near-term payments on their due dates. An arbitrary percentage is less useful than seeing which costs could arrive together and whether your bank balance can cover them.
