See when you’ll need the money

Compare payments through your first eight weeks in New Zealand, including earlier move costs. All amounts are NZD. Price furniture, appliances, transport and a temporary stay before adding them to a plan.

Start with one plan and the figures you know, or load the fictional example. This worksheet covers an ordinary residential tenancy and your first eight weeks after arrival. Dates are needed for the final calculation; you can save an unfinished plan.

What the comparison includes

The cash balance runs from the opening date through day 56 after arrival (arrival is day 1). Leave out bills already paid before the opening balance. Living costs are paid weekly in advance. Regular rent starts after the first prepaid period. The model keeps the original calendar payday across short months; it does not move payments for holidays.

Spending includes rent used within the plan dates, temporary accommodation, living costs and other payments. Bonds stay separate. Rent for days beyond the plan is shown as unused prepaid rent. The tenancy continues through the period, with no bond return. Unentered bills, interest and exchange-rate movements are excluded.

Bond and advance rent explains ordinary tenancy limits. Use funds you can access; an account waiting for activation may not allow spending yet.

A worked example: arriving before the first pay

This fictional household has $15,000 available on 1 November 2026 and arrives on 15 November. It pays $1,800 for flights, spends 14 nights at $150, then starts a $600-a-week tenancy on 29 November. The tenancy requires a four-week bond and two weeks’ advance. Setup costs are $1,000 and other living costs are $400 a week.

Take-home pay of $2,400 arrives fortnightly from 11 December. Through 9 January 2027, spending is $11,700.00, with $2,400.00 held as bond. The lowest cash balance is $4,900.00 on 6 Dec 2026. The example keeps a $3,000 reserve.

The tenancy payment is $3,600.00. Delaying first pay by two weeks reduces the lowest balance to $2,900, requiring another $100 to retain the same reserve. Spending remains $11,700.

Start with money you can access

Use your spendable balance on the opening date, after bills already paid. A transfer still in progress or an account waiting for activation may leave you unable to pay a bill on time. If you are changing currencies, enter the NZD amount you expect to receive after charges.

Build the first version with quotes where you have them and your own estimates where you don’t. Answer the optional worksheet questions to leave out regular pay or a paid temporary stay when they do not apply. For other amounts, enter 0 only when you mean none. Leave unknown amounts blank; you can save an unfinished worksheet and return with the missing figures.

Compare rent, accommodation and payday dates

Once your first plan is useful, choose “Add another plan to compare”. Copy Plan A to Plan B, then change rent, accommodation, income or a payment date. Keeping the other details fixed makes the difference easier to understand. Try a later first pay date even if the salary itself is certain: it is the date money arrives that pays the bill.

Changing the arrival date leaves the other dates where you entered them. Review the tenancy, accommodation and pay dates together before comparing again. If you book a longer hotel stay, change the number of nights too.

Add travel, furniture and setup costs

Flights and luggage, freight or storage, insurance, local transport, furniture, utility setup and official application charges can all change the result. Add each bill under “Other move payments”, using the date you expect to pay it. You can add more rows, so flights, shipping and furniture can fall on different dates. Use additional-income rows for a second earner or a transfer that becomes spendable later.

The arrival-cost worksheet gives you dated examples for beds, appliances, home essentials, transport and a temporary stay. Select only what your household needs. Use your own quotes for second-hand purchases, shipping, delivery and installation. A furnished rental or a home with appliances supplied can reduce the amount you need at the start; check the actual inventory before leaving a purchase out.

The preview shows existing setup and travel payments so you can replace overlaps. Replacing a row removes its whole amount: split a combined shipping-and-setup bill first if part of it is still needed. Selected purchases become dated payment rows; a temporary stay replaces the plan’s existing accommodation entry. Your selection stays editable in the downloaded plan file. Paying for an item later can improve your early cash balance, but check that you can manage until it arrives.

Accommodation examples are advertised starting prices for the named room and occupancy. Confirm your dates, total charges and payment terms. If you pay a deposit and balance separately, enter both under “Other move payments” and set temporary accommodation nights to 0 so the stay is counted once. Keep separately modelled temporary lodging out of weekly living costs. Regular transport belongs in weekly living costs; an airport trip or car purchase belongs in the dated payments only if it is not already included elsewhere.

The ongoing household budget helps fill the weekly living-cost amount. The bank-account guide explains when funds become usable, and bond and advance rent explains the tenancy payment.

Check the lowest cash balance

A healthy closing balance can hide a difficult week. The comparison shows the lowest balance after each payment, and how much extra opening cash would keep the reserve you selected. That makes a delayed pay date, an early bond payment or overlapping accommodation visible while you still have time to change the plan.

Match the payment dates in your agreement

A two-week advance covers the opening fortnight. After that, payments follow the weekly or fortnightly schedule in your agreement. Choose that schedule separately from the first advance. If you have quoted bond amounts, enter those and their payment date in the optional bond section.

For income, calendar monthly means the same day in each month, using the last day where a month is shorter. A 31 January payday is followed by 28 February in 2026 and then 31 March. Use the actual first payday your employer gives you. A smaller first payment belongs in “First pay amount”. If payroll changes later dates, represent those payments with additional-income rows and set regular pay to 0.

Save the plan to finish later

Your working figures stay in this tab while you consult the rent and living-cost guides. “Download editable plans” saves your entries and worksheet choices in a file you can reopen, including a second plan if you have used one. “Print / save PDF” gives you the current plan or comparison and payment records to discuss with your household.

Keep a saved copy before closing the browser. Browser settings and session recovery can affect temporary storage. Reopening a file shows a confirmation before replacing your current plans.

Does the moving-cost total include the rental bond?

The cash comparison includes the rental bond payment on its due date, reducing your available balance. It appears separately from spending. The comparison also identifies rent paid for days beyond the eight-week period. This helps explain why money leaving your account can exceed the cost of living through those eight weeks.

How much money should I bring to New Zealand?

Start with the cash required by your own dates and bills. The tool shows the extra opening money needed to retain your chosen reserve. If you expect to work, try a later first payday; if you need temporary accommodation, try a longer stay. The optional fictional example shows how the calculation works. Replace its figures with your own before relying on a result.

Can I make a moving budget using savings before I have a job?

Yes. Enter the savings you can spend in NZD under “Available cash”, with the date they become usable. If no regular employment pay will arrive during the eight weeks, choose “No” in the pay question. Add any later transfer or other receipt separately on the date it becomes spendable. Keep money already included in your opening balance out of those later receipts so it is counted once.

What if I do not know my first payday or moving costs yet?

Keep unknown figures blank and save the unfinished worksheet. Choose “Not sure yet” if you have not decided whether pay or paid temporary accommodation should be included. The planner asks you to resolve that answer before showing a complete result. A researched quote or a clearly chosen estimate can help you explore a possibility; check it again before committing to a booking or payment.

Do I need to include temporary accommodation in my moving budget?

Include a paid temporary stay if you expect to use one while finding or waiting for your longer-term home. Enter the nights, nightly price and payment date, and check whether it overlaps with rent. If you have arranged a free stay or can move straight into your home, choose “No paid temporary stay”. Changing that answer keeps any earlier accommodation figures saved, so you can bring them back if your plans change.

Can I change my moving plan without entering everything again?

Yes. Change the worksheet answers to show the parts you need, or add another plan and copy your first plan into it. Choosing “No” excludes that part from the calculation while retaining the previous entries. “Show all fields” lets you inspect them. When you return to one plan, the second plan stays in the editable download and can be reopened for another comparison.
